Actuarial Science at Illinois is ranked as one of the best actuarial programs in the country. The University of Illinois is named as a Center for Actuarial Excellence by the Society of Actuaries (SOA), only one of a few in the United States. The University of Illinois is unique in the fact that the program works closely with the Departments of Statistics and Finance in order to ensure that students have a strong understanding of both theory and practice in the casualty/property industry and the life insurance industry, opening many opportunities for students in either direction.

The Actuarial Science Club at UIUC is also a big selling point of the program. This club opens up many networking and leadership opportunities. It brings to light many different companies through company presentations and by hosting the Actuarial Science Meet the Firm event.

The University of Illinois Research Park provides on-campus professional development opportunities for students from the Actuarial Science program. Companies such as State Farm, Axis Reinsurance, and Country Financial look to hire interns throughout the year to not only give experience but also to look for future students to hire right out of college.

Because many of our faculty members are either accredited SOA or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) actuaries, they know the path that each student takes in career development and understand the struggles they go through. Our faculty members are willing to help students along their actuarial career paths.

The Illinois Risk Lab is a unique offering of the actuarial science program at Illinois. It provides students with opportunities to participate in faculty-led or corporate-sponsored research projects. To many students, IRisk Lab is the only opportunity to have a full research experience before entering the labor force. Many students who have graduated from the lab are highly sought after by the industry, owing to their strong analytical and communication skills.
